Typology of Shoe Patterns
derby Derby/Blucher: A classic shoe pattern with laces whose quarters are sewn over the vamp only at the lower edge, enabling the facing to open outwards in order to put on and give the shoe a better adjusting fit of instep in comparison to an Oxford shoe.
 
oxford Oxford: Footwear with laces , of a basic shape, with the vamp overlaid and stitched upon the quarter, which forms a 'V' shape lace pattern.
 
buckle Buckle/Monkstrap: A classic Derby style shoe with strap and buckle whose quarters are sew over the vamp only at the lower edge and the buckle is usually fixed with elastic at it's base.
 
loafer Loafer or Slip-On: A slip-on pattern where the upper covers the instep girth and can extend higher.... plain or with a stitched apron, and can include a leather penny strap or other decorative hardware.
 
ankle boot Ankle boot/Chukka Boot: Footwear Derby or Balmoral, with laces or buckle, whose quarters are extended to cover the ankle.
 
low boot Low Boot: whose bootleg covers the ankle but does not reach the calf/shank - usually produced as a Derby or as a unique style slip-on with double gored side panels.
 
half boot Half boot: A boot, whose bootleg covers the ankle and reach half way up the calf/shank.
 
boot Boot: A high boot whose leg usually reaches the knee, usually plane.
 
rider boot Riding/Equestrian Style Boot: A high boot whose leg reaches the knee, and can sometimes extend beyond, and whose pattern usually includes a contrasting leather topline.
